Manta rays are the only rays that have their mouths right at the front of their heads rather than on the underside. Their skin is covered in mucus, which helps protect them from infections. They move by undulating like waves or by flapping their sides like wings. Ancient Greek doctors would use the venom from a stingray’s spine as an anesthetic.
