They are covered with a thick fur that keeps them warm during the winter. Their paws are large and furry, and when they walk their paws hit the ground with a spreading motion that functions as natural snowshoes. They are rarely seen since they avoid humans and hunt mainly at night. They are skilled hunters with great hearing; the little black tufts on their ears function as hearing aids. They have exceptional eyesight that lets them see a mouse up to 250 ft away. Their population can be dependent on their food, if the population of the snowshoe hare is low than so is theirs.
